What’s a good, cheap home VOIP provider?

Question by : What’s a good, cheap home VOIP provider?
My family’s been using Packet8 (now 8×8) the last several years and we currently pay $ 240 for the whole year’s service, plus ~$ 6/mo in fees. That was great compared to what we used to pay AT&T, but by now there must be better alternatives. Trouble is, it seems there are hundreds of VOIP companies and it’s overwhelming looking for the best value.

Can anybody recommend a cheaper company with good service? Simple, unlimited US plan with number portability is what we want.
Doing some more searching, it looks like Phone Power may suit my needs. And only $ 253 per year including all taxes & fees. Plus a promo running now that gives you a second year free.
I’ve heard of MagicJack and know several people who have used it with success (and read online reviews from people who’d encountered many problems), but they still don’t support porting your current phone number to them. That’s an important feature for us.

ooma = $ 250 for the device +$ 125/yr for premier service… or you can opt for the “free” lifetime service, and pay about $ 15-20 a year in taxes and fees…. if you do not opt for the premier service, then you will have to pay $ 40 to port your number…

vonage is more than what you are paying… $ 25/mo X 12 = $ 300

magicjack is not that great for a telephone replacement, it is good for supplemental service $ 40 for the device and first year of service, $ 20/year after that… but it is a USB device, that connects to your PC, so your PC needs to be on in order to work… they will not port your number…

you can check out http://voipbuster.com which provides “free” service to certain destinations, but it requires a balance in your account to make free calls… and as far as i am aware they do not provide you with a DID, so you would need to get a DID from http://ipkall.com or elsewhere so it does not fit into your ability to port your existing number…

Don’t you have phone books in Chennai or India? Go on Yahoo or some other place with yellow pages (a phone book) and look up the companies. Visit each of their web sites or try calling them. For VOIP, why do you want it? If it’s to save money, try something free such as Skype. For regular phone service, a regular land phone or a cellular phone is better.

Phonepower VOIP poor bad quality service and very poor software configuration “SIP agent”?

Question by : Phonepower VOIP poor bad quality service and very poor software configuration “SIP agent”?
I purchased the phonepower with a two years plan, buy one year and get the 2nd year free, it’s a good deal, if the phone works :) , but it has been a nightmare for me. I spent endless hours with their Tech support, and I think by now I know all of them by name :) , nice guys, but bad VoIP phone, service and definitely software configuration.
The first 8 months, the service worked okay, phone will disconnect couple of times a week, but I was okay with that. All changed, with not changes on my end. For the last 4-5 months, the phone hardly worked once a week on an average, every single time the phone is down, I am told by the Tech support that I have exceed my “SIP agent count”, when that happens, the phone shuts down, and it will require me to call or email the Tech support to rest it, which can be a long process, and many times I have to make several requests for the phone to work again, even after the SIP agent has been reset.
I have done everything they have asked of me to do, I switch from Capricorn to Aquarius to eliminate this issues, as they requested, I also switched and paid for a Static IP address, I reconfigured the Grandstream frotn modem as they suggested, I also contacted my Internet provider, my phone company and ADSL, all gave me a clean bill of health on the line, not to mention, I never had a problem using the internet at all, no disruption what so ever, yet, they tell the SIP agent kicks because poor connection, and it’s set for 5 count and then you are out for good.
Not really sure if the SIP agent something all VoIP uses with the same criteria these guys are doing, or these guys thought to be smarter.
If any one has the same problem with it, please share with me your experience, I am thinking to post a Facebook page “ Phonepower with a busy dial tone”

Bottom line, it’s one of those companies, if the products works, you are good, but the minute you need help or got a lemon, forget it. This phone and service has been a waste of time, and I highly don’t recommend it.

Is there a question in there? If you don’t like their products and services, demand a refund, and return their equipment.

Then, try SKYPE instead, they only charge a flat $ 3.00 per month to land lines in Canada and the USA.

And Skype is free, PC to PC, and it has awesome audio and video quality:
