Does data transfer happen while VOIP phone is not in use?

I am currently not subscribed to unlimited internet facility. I am charged as per data transfer each month. I recently took VOIP connection. My question is, will there be any data transfer while my phone is hooked to internet but not in use. If so how much per hour. My internet company is going to charge me based on my data transfer so I want to be sure.

  1. Well it depends on your VoIP provider. You may ask your them for this question. Because some providers may don’t, while others may do.

    Good Luck,

  2. Assuming your phone is registered with a VoIP provider there will be an exchange of traffic containing messages to keep it registered. This is a very, very small amount of traffic and I really do not think you have to worry it will significantly eat up your allowance.

It may be possible to control the frequency of registration but sometimes the provider fixes that.
